Best of December 2013

Is it just me, or did the month of December seem to fly by really fast? December was definitely a hectic month. Mattias celebrated his 20th birthday and he also flew to Stockholm for a special interview. It was really exciting living vicariously through him. But no, I also had a few exciting things happening too- like my student visa for Switzerland finally being approved. I also started to pack my luggage and spent a lot of money on presents because I had family from Malaysia visiting for Christmas!

The highlight of December (aside from celebrating Mattias’ birthday through Skype and having my family over for Christmas) was seeing this little guy:

My little nephew, Sheldon! I really wish I got to see him more often but hey, sometimes we can’t always get what we want. I really hope I get to see him one last time before I fly to Switzerland!

Anyway, here are my December favourites:

1. The Simpsons Tapped Out

Remember the days of Farmville and Bakery Story? I don’t- because my days were pretty much wasted slaving away on expanding my virtual farm and baking virtual cakes.

After a year of watching my friend Rachel play The Simpsons Tapped Out on her iPhone, I finally decided to download the game- and yeah, if you haven’t figured out, I’m absolutely addicted. The objective of the game is to rebuild Springfield after Homer blows it up; you have to collect all the characters and complete tasks in order to level up and get access to new buildings.

Any fan of The Simpsons will love this game- It kind of feels like an extension of the TV episodes- like a Simpsons movie part 2. The only downside is that it takes a while for the game to load- but that means it’s a great time-waster when you’re on the toilet or prolonging sleep.

 2. Dusk Sparkling Pomegranate Soy Blend Candle

Continuing my little obsession over candles; I bought this gorgeous Sparkling  Pomegranate soy blend candle from Dusk. I’m not sure if they’re still selling them in store as they were selling them as part of their Christmas stock, but the scent is very pleasing to the nostrils 😉 It has a tangy kind of smell and it fills the room with the scent really quick. This was my first twin-wick candle so I was super excited to light it up and see it illuminate in my room. It really set the Christmas-y scene for me this season!

3. Frankie Magazine Jan/Feb 2014 Issue

One of my worst habits is buying and collecting magazines that I flip through in half-an-hour and never read again. Frankie magazine is not one of those. I’ve always had the impression that Frankie is a lot more hipster-esque and aimed for the more creative and artistic souls. You won’t find any celebrity gossip in Frankie. It specialises in design, art, photography, fashion, travel, music, craft and lifestyle.

The January/February 2014 issue was probably one of the best purchases I made during December as it’s filled with a ton of gorgeous extras including greeting cards, DIY pattern envelopes and a 2014 wall planner.

If you’re into creative and artsy-fartsy things, I highly recommend that you buy Frankie. I loved this issue so much I’m contemplating whether I should bring it with me to Switzerland.

4. Handmade bracelet by my cousin Elisa

My next December favourite is this awesome handmade bracelet that I received from my cousin Elisa for Christmas! How talented is she?! I love the colours and the pattern- it kind of makes me feel a little more youthful

5. Witchery Pullover

I love me a bargain! I went into David Jones a little after Boxing Day and found this EXTRA LARGE Witchery pullover/jumper. Normally I’d be like, “heh, extra large?! S’if that would fit me!” but I decided to put it on and I loved the way it drapes over the torso and it’s super cosy- très parfait for Switzerland I think

 6. Sportscraft Pullover

Another great bargain at David Jones- this Sportscraft navy blue pullover is made from 95% cotton and 5% cashmere. I’ll admit, this is probably the best quality pullover I own as I usually buy a lot of my clothes from cheap stores. It just goes to show, it’s totally worth forking out a little extra money for nice things. My mind is set on wearing this on the plane over to Switzerland.

7. Owl Necklace from Mattias

Mattias was super sweet this Christmas and sent me a package containing some really thoughtful and pretty gifts! One of them was this owl necklace (we have a little inside joke/moment about owls). I absolutely adore this necklace, although I’m trying to find a smaller chain for it so it sits higher on my chest.

8. God Jul card from Mattias

Along with the owl necklace (and a matching beanie and mittens- totally necessary for Switzerland!) he also sent me this pretty Christmas card! It says God Jul which means Merry Christmas in Swedish. I LOVE ALL THINGS SWEDISH so this was very much appreciated! Look how cute the ‘me-to-you’ bear is! Gnawww….

9. Book Lamp

So, I’ve seen a lot of book lights in the bookstore but I could never really justify a reason to buy one for myself- until I saw this. IT IS LITERALLY SHAPED LIKE A LAMP. I was at Bondi Junction waiting for my Swiss Visa to get stuck into my passport, so to pass the time I went into the ABC shop. I saw this book lamp beckoning me and I was entranced by its novelty beauty.  Is it justifiably worth $19.99? Maybe not, but I bought it anyway. It’s super cute and tiny and you can stand it up or clip it on your book.

If you, like me, are into novelty things like this, you can order it from the ABC shop.

So that concludes my December 2013 favourites. December was a great month spent with family and friends.
